Shakeology and the “Made in a Facility with Nuts & Shellfish” Labeling

Shakeology and the “Made in a Facility with Nuts & Shellfish” Labeling
Shakeo Labeling :
“Yes, all Shakeology formulas are made in a manufacturing facility that also processes known allergens such as soy, milk, egg, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts and wheat (gluten) ingredients. While our manufacturing procedures follows strict, required FDA Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), which include immediate cleaning and breaking down of equipment after every production batch and proper air filtration systems as precautionary measures, the possibility of cross-contamination can never be 100% eliminated, therefore we are required by the FDA, to include a warning that addresses this.”

What those labels MEAN:
It says “made in a facility the ALSO”. Not “made using or made with”. That is a big difference. From my pharmaceutical days it was explained to me like this…Many food and drug producing factories are located within one primary building. (similar to an office building or sky rise for business) Its very common to have one massive factory with hundreds of smaller productions. Because of this, the FDA requires that be said on the label. Shakeology does not contain the above ingredients at all so it doesnt even make sense that it would be on the the equipment. But in the rare case a small soy, shellfish or peanut fragment or particle “got out” and crossed over into another factory, it MUST for liability be printed on the packaging. This wording is pretty clear, but confuses alot of people that all the production is in the same room mixed in together. Not the case at all.
If we were to certify Shakeology vegan (or organic for that matter) it would take certifying EACH individual superfood since they come from different parts of the world. The cost to do so (for really what extra benefit??) would escalate the cost of a monthly bag shakeology to a small mortgage. Just for a label. The entire reason we import the products from their original countries of origin is so that monsanto has no hand in manipulating quality and the soil stays nutrient rich and the products are grown organically.
Anyway- it does NOT contain shellfish or nuts etc nor is made with shellfish or nuts. But production guidelines make it such that it must be listed if produced in the same facility as the above. People are at a far greater risk of cross contamination when they eat at a restaurant or goes grocery shopping at a place that also sells seafood or nuts.
